Morning Rush Hour at the Holland Tunnel, Jersey Side: Say Hello to the End of the World

A month ago I used Holland Tunnel traffic as a vehicle for explaining how, with the best of intentions, our world has gotten too big and unwieldy. Here’s some photos of rush hour traffic that I took on November 27, 2006 at roughly 7AM.

The tolls have doubled since then, not to mention the price of gas. Cynical rumour has it that the increase is mostly to fund the construction of One World Center. At 1776 feet tall–get it, 1776?–it’s the tallest office building in the USofA. And it’s a dog. The office space isn’t needed.

Just think how tall that puppy’d be, though, if the USofA had gone metric. 1776 meters! Yikes! But that’d sure show those Arabs, wouldn’t it?

I’ll say this, though. Whem Mother Nature wants to, she can sure put on a show.

This is traffic coming out of the tunnel. That, of course, is the Empire State Building in the background. It’s plenty tall. And it didn’t take a decade’s worth of hassle to build either.

I wonder would Kong would think of One World Center?

Oh, and the top couple hundred feet of One World Center is faked. It’s an antenna that’s been dressed up so it can be counted as part of the building so that the New York City in the USofA can ‘officially’ clock in at 1776. It’s a cheat, a sleezy work-around. Just like those fancy financial products through crashed the world economy back in 2008.

That’s where we are in the land of the free and the home of the brave, faking our way into a future that’s going to challenge us like we’ve never been challenged. The weather doesn’t stop for any human person, wish, or desire, not even the mail man, not even King of the World.
