219 years ago our originators “brought forth upon this continent a new nation: conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
Today we have less liberty. Inequality has reached obscene proportions as millions die of preventable diseases and starvation each year, and over a billion children suffer sociogenic brain damage worldwide, as the rich get ever richer. We have been engaged for many years in stalemated, unwinnable wars that waste Nature and bankrupt us spiritually, morally, economically and politically. If, seven generations from now, we are to celebrate freedom and the proposition that all humans and all lifeforms are part of the Great Order Of Diversity, the Great Equality Aspiration, we must renounce fear and war, victimization and alienation, to participate fully in Life, Liberty, the Pursuit of Happiness following faithfully “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” that guided our founders.
We, as a united people, mindful of our consumption and numbers, must dedicate ourselves to consecrating Earth, hallowing this planet and all its creatures great and small, so that future generations may live in peace, ecological balance and liberty. This Declaration of Interdependance introduces a Great Transition that places joy, well being, and sustainable economics first.
In this spirit we resolve that this nation, under “the laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” shall have a new birth of freedom . . . and that government of the people . . . by the people . . . for the people . . . shall not perish from the Earth.”
This brief declaration, echoing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, will mean little if it is not followed by a simple, practical and unifying strategy for bringing the Transition Party USA into existence soon. We are way too big and failing. Expanding technology, growing population, excessive and misplaced pride are all accelerating, reinforcing each other, and completely unmanageable (see G. Bateson, Steps to an Ecology of Mind, “The Roots of Ecological Crisis” 1970: 488-493). Here’s the way to go: 1) appeal to some Republicans with a Truly-conserving party; 2) appeal to some Democrats with a Transition to sustainable economics party; 3) appeal to the largest voting block of Independents with a Traditions party based on common sense and common decency.
By embracing all three appeals–Truth/Traditions/Transition–we can solve the “polarization & governmental paralysis problem” in 2012. Win a pivotal role in the House of Representatives. Break the log-jam in the Senate. And most important, thwart the evil transition from “friendly fascism” (B. Gross’s book 1984) to “nasty fascism” (N. Wolf, End of America). President Eisenhower warned us fifty years ago in January1961!
Truly Conserving can be very simple and straightforward: adopt the over 30 conservings listed at the “conserving consensus” website and please a large majority of Americans. Two-term Congressman John Hall, (19th District NY) endorsed this list years ago.
Traditions (e.g. Ralph Nader, The Seventeen Traditions, 2007) are key to both Truly Conserving, and in persuading voters to become a force for Transition.
Transition themes: The Great Localization and Engagement, The Great Reskilling and The Great Economic Irrigation i.e. creating 20 hour a week green/interdependance jobs in localities all over the USA, nurturing sustainable family farms and innovative, clean energy & clean production everywhere.
